I am a criminal defence lawyer. I practice criminal law and nothing else.
What’s more, I do criminal appeals, and only appeals. No trial work – period.
Criminal appeals are what I do best, so I stick with that, rather than spreading myself across multiple areas of law, or mixing my practice with both trials and appeals. Criminal appeals are what I have done since graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1997 when I began my career at the Ministry of the Attorney General. As Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office – Criminal, I carried an intense and challenging caseload of criminal appeals, learning from the top criminal lawyers in the province and appearing regularly in the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
In 2009 I decided to open my own law practice and do defence appeals. I had seen regular people who had been caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time and had the extreme misfortune of being charged with a criminal offence. And, unfortunately, our system of criminal justice is not perfect. Mistakes happen. Wrongful convictions are real. I wanted to help.
I knew firsthand that the complex world of criminal appeals was a place few lawyers ventured, and that the attorneys representing the Crown on appeal were highly specialized in their field. Unless there was an equally experienced and qualified lawyer on the other side, the scales would be unfairly balanced for anyone seeking to appeal their criminal conviction.
With my extensive experience in criminal appeals, I provide clients with a crucial advantage at the appellate level which cannot be underestimated. In the vast majority of cases, the Court of Appeal is the last recourse for litigants.
In over two decades of criminal appeal practice I have dealt with the full range of criminal offences, from sexual assault to murder, white collar crime and participating in a criminal organization. I have appeared in the Court of Appeal for Ontario upwards of one hundred times, arguing complex criminal law issues such as self-defence, the state of mind required to establish murder, and constitutional issues arising under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In addition to representing clients, I also assist other lawyers and law firms who require expertise in criminal appeal or legal research matters. Learn more here if you are a criminal lawyer.
